Description: This ULTRA RARE map was originally published in an atlas by Frederick De Wit of Amsterdam right around the 1680s. This is "Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Americae Descriptio. per F. De Wit Amstelodami" which translates to something like "Accurate Total Map of America". Frederick De Wit was a well known Dutch cartographer and map maker. This map depicts the entire North and South American Continent with California depicted as an Island and a big blank area above it. At this time the few explorers that had made it to that side of the continent believed California was a separate land mass and they had not made it much to the north. This map also shows some early views of the Great Lakes which were barely mapped at this point. The map has a fold down the center because it was in an atlas originally. It is a copper plate style print with hand colored decorations. The artwork itself measures 22.75 inches by 19.25 inches not counting the white edge of the map that doesn't have artwork on it. The map is in good condition overall especially considering the age. The colors are still pretty nice with some minor yellowing at the edges of the borders. There is a little wear right in the center of the map where the fold is and it looks like a couple of small professional touch ups where the original brown colored ink caused the page to get brittle and crack. Luckily that is just in a few spots where they marked a river or a border with brown. This map was museum quality framed by a professional using Optium Tru Vue acrylic anti-reflective glazing. The frame has a couple of chips in the paint, but those could be easily touched up. The person that I bought this from had a few different original 1600s era framed maps so they definitely had high quality art on their walls like this piece.
