Description: Offered for sale is the 1910 Championship gold medal awarded to Fred Broadfoot of the New York Athletic Club's "Winged Footers" hockey team. The Winged Footers, also referred to as the Mercury Foot wearers in some period magazine and newspaper accounts, belonged to the American Amateur Hockey League (AAHL). The AAHL was first formed in 1889 and formally began organized play in 1896. The league lasted until 1918 and was generally recognized as one of the top hockey leagues in the United States since there were no professional teams until 1925. As a result, this medal represents one of the top U.S. hockey player awards given for the 1909-10 season. The 1909-10 NYAC Winged Footers hockey team finished first in its league with a 7-1-0 record and each of the players was given an individual 14k gold medal produced by Robert Stoll of New York, the official manufacturer of New York Athletic Club (NYAC) athletic awards. The front of the gold medal has "NYAC Hockey Champions 1910" ornately embossed on its surface while the reverse side bears the inscription "Fred C. Broadfoot" near the top with "R. Stoll N.Y. Solid Gold" engraved near the bottom edge. The total length of the black ribbon and chain is approximately 8 inches while the 14k solid gold medal is nearly 1 1/4 inches in diameter.Fred Broadfoot played two seasons (1908-09, 1909-10) with the NYAC Winged Footers, winning the championship each year. He also skated with the Regina Military Battalion in the Military Hockey League during World War I. One of Broadfoot's biggest games occurred in the annual match up between the top amateur teams from the United States and Canada. In the 1909 International game between the NYAC Winged Footers and the Montreal Victorias on March 6, Broadfoot scored a key second half goal to help bring the New York team back from a two-goal deficit. The U.S. team went on to win the game 8-6 in a rare victory over one of Canada's elite teams.
