New York: The Macmillan Company, 1911. 346 pp + 6 pp of adverts, 9.25 x 6.25". In fair condition. Decorated cloth boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine collapsed. Gilt lettering and color illustration are generally dulled from shelf-wear, but still presentable. Top edge gilt. Both top and bottom edges of text-block exhibit ink ex-library stamps. Front & rear gutters split at fly-leaves, binding mesh exposed. Library marginalia present throughout preliminaries. Ex-library stamp found at bottom edge of title page: Library The National Bible Institute, New York City. General toning throughout text-block, mostly to edges of leaves. Glue residue found on rear end-page from previous library card envelope. Bookseller's ticket found on bottom edge of rear paste-down: Ideal Bookstore, 1125 Amsterdam Ave. Opp. Columbia Univ. New York, 25, N.Y. Binding intact - hinges fragile. Please see photos. Abraham Valentine Williams Jackson (1862-1937) was an American specialist on Indo-European languages. He graduated from Columbia University in 1883. In 1901, during a visit to India and Ceylon, he received special attention from the Parsees, who presented to Columbia a valuable collection of Zoroastrian manuscripts in recognition of the instruction there given by him in their ancient texts. In 1903, he made a second journey to the Orient, this time visiting Iran. He also visited Central Asia before 1918. Jackson's grammar of Avestan, the language used in the Zoroastrian scriptures, is still considered to be the seminal work on the topic. Attractive Contents, including fold-out map of Persia.
