Description: The Chicago Great Western Railroad (CGW) was a Class I railroad that linked Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City. Through mergers and new construction, the railroad, named Chicago Great Western after 1892, quickly became a multi-state carrier. In 1968 it merged with the Chicago & North Western Railway, which abandoned most of CGW's trackage. Most surviving trackage is now part of the Union Pacific. Items from the CGW are not readily found, but I offer for auction a preferred capital stock certificate dated April 28, 1930. It is for 100 shares at $100 each. 1930 CGW Chicago Great Western Railroad preferred capital stock certificate Click images to enlarge Description The Chicago Great Western Railroad (CGW) was a Class I railroad that linked Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City. Through mergers and new construction, the railroad, named Chicago Great Western after 1892, quickly became a multi-state carrier. One of the last Class I railroads to be built, it competed against several other more well-established railroads in the same territory, and developed a corporate culture of innovation and efficiency to survive. Nicknamed the "Corn Belt Route" because of its operating area in the Midwestern United States, the railroad was also sometimes called the "Lucky Strike Road", due to the similarity in design between the herald of the CGW and the logo used for Lucky Strike cigarettes. The stock measures appx 11 1/2 x 8 inches and is printed on thin stock bond paper. The logo features a steam locomotive with consist at a station. The certificate is used and in good condition. All writing/markings are from its issuance and processing. It has no rips or tears but displays the normal cancellation punch holes. A nice addition to someone's CGW collection. Images sell!
