Description: This is a 1939 City College of New York Microcosm yearbook. It is in excellent condition. It includes a photo and dedication to Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter at the beginning of the book. Felix Frankfurter was a 1902 graduate of CCNY. Perhaps the most noteworthy individual in the yearbook is Bernard Taub Feld, described below. The book begins with a photos of administrators followed by descriptions and photos of academic department faculty. A fourteen page history of the class of 1939 is provided next. The main book section comes next with 41 pages of individual photos of graduates. This is followed by the Technology Section with individual photos of students studying various engineering fields. There is a major section devoted to R.O.T.C. Organizations come next: Student Council, Microcosm staff, Campus Society, Mercury Society, Dramatic Society, Bacteriology Society, and others. Athletics are given major prominence, basketball, football, and baseball. Near the end of the yearbook are several pages with large photos of science professors: chemistry, mathematics, geology, biology, physics, and more. Wikipedia writes: Bernard Taub Feld (pictured on page 41) (December 21, 1919 – February 19, 1993) was a professor of physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He helped develop the atomic bomb and later led an international movement among scientists to banish nuclear weapons.[1] Feld graduated from CCNY with a bachelor of science degree in 1939. He began graduate school at Columbia University, but suspended his studies to join the American war effort. He spent the war serving as an assistant to Enrico Fermi and Leo Szilard working on the Manhattan Project. After World War II, he returned to Columbia University to receive his PhD in 1945.Bernard Feld states: I was involved in the original sin, and I have spent a large part of my life atoning for it. – Bernard T. Feld Feld was on the faculty of MIT from 1948 until he retired in 1990. During this time, he was President of the Albert Einstein Peace Prize Foundation and editor of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists and head of the American Pugwash Committee. The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995. Feld was a leader in these conferences, serving as U.S. Chairman from 1963 to 1973 and as International Chairman from 1973 to 1978. It was in this role that he attracted the anger of Richard Nixon's White House. He was eleventh on Nixon's list of enemies, a fact that pleased him tremendously. One notable graduate, Bernard Chasnov,is pictured on page 37 as a 1939 graduate: Bernard Chasnov (1919-2008) was a physicist for the U.S. Army. Mr. Chasnov worked for the Department of the Army form 1946 until his retirement in 1984. He worked for various Army agencies including ERDL, SEANITOPS, and ASPO. Primarily, his work concerned night vision equipment and remote sensing. In retirement, Mr. Chasnov volunteered for the Red Cross, Annapolis’ Crisis hotline, and made recordings for the blind. Another notable 1939 graduate is Ernest Cotlove, M.D.(1920-1970). His photo appears on page 38. The Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists is a learned society for scientists in the fields of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine. It was founded on November 12, 1966, in by a group of fifty-one individuals, led by David Seligson, JonStraumfjord, George Z. Williams, Ernest Cotlove, and Ellis Benson. The society's founding mission was to represent scientists in the fields of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine in both the United States and Canada. As of 2015, it had 295 active members, as well as an additional 127 associate members, 195 emeritus members, and 5 honorary members. Along with the American Society for Clinical Pathology, it co-sponsors the American Journal of Clinical Pathology. The book: The yearbook is in excellent condition. It is 13 3/4" tall and 10 1/2" " wide. It has 171 pages. Covers are dark blue cloth over boards. It is hardcover. Front cover shows " 1939 Microcosm The City College" in copper colored letters and a photo of a university building. There are no loose or missing pages, there are no binding issues, there is no writing in the book.
