This book is the basis for the 1979 movie of the same name about the murder of a Los Angeles police officer and the ensuing murder trial; directed by Harold Becker and starring James Woods. It is a 7th printing of the 1st edition and shows a copyright date of 1973. It was published by Delacorte Press and the copyright page contains the words “Seventh Printing.” The dust jacket has not been price clipped and still shows the original retail price of $ 8.95 on the inside front flap. The book contains 427 numbered pages. Please note: There are faint “spots” showing in the photos, at least on my computer; these are from my camera and they are not on the book or the dust jacket. The photos with this listing are of the actual book you will receive, which is out of my personal collection; I at one time was collecting first edition books that were made into movies. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this book. What I see with the book itself are: There is a previous owner’s name written in ink on the front free endpaper. There is an old $ 1.98 price tag on the front inner flap of the dust jacket. There are two tiny stains and a bit of foxing to the edge of the text block and the top edge of the text block is dyed red as it came from the publisher. There is a minor “stain” to the lower right bottom corner of the rear cover. Otherwise, there are no markings, writings, underlining or stains of any kind inside or outside the book. There are no tears to any pages and none are dog-eared. The dust jacket shows shelf wear and edgewear along with a bit of chipping (see close-up photo of this), some “dampstain” and “foxing” to the inside and there is also a ½” long tear to the top rear corner at the spine along with some related creasing – see the close-up photo of this. The dust jacket is now protected in a new Brodart clear polyester archival dust cover. The book is not ex-library, not a book club edition, and has not been price clipped or remainder marked. It is tightly bound, has no noticeable fading to the dust jacket and no offensive smell or odor. It comes from a smoke & pet free home. Please keep in mind these photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is. Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos, it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo. Approximate Dimensions The book is about 9.25” (23.5 cm) tall by about 6.375” (16.2 cm) wide and is about 1.5” (3.8 cm) in thickness. Approximate Weight About 1 pound 13.375 ounces (834 grams).
