Ahti 9614 Scandinavian Knife Imported from Finland

Description: Ahti 9614 Scandinavian Knife Imported from Finland Ahti knives are manufactured in Kauhava, Finland, which has a long and rich history of being known for knife making. The Ahti knives are made by Reino Kamppila and his son, who operate a fourth-generation family business of knife making. Theirs is a smaller shop, but they produce knives of excellent quality and workmanship. The carbon steel (0.8%) blades are hardened to about 59 on the Rockwell scale, and knives having stainless steel blades are hardened to about 57 Rockwell. The knives and their leather sheathes are works of beauty, and are visually appealing as well as satisfyingly functional. As with most Scandinavian knives, the handles are made from curly birch, sanded and stained. The fittings on the knives are polished brass, and there are plastic inserts in the sheathes to protect both the sheath and the hand, as these knives are quite sharp and could easily slice through both if inserted incorrectly into the sheath. The belt loops aren't attached directly to the sheathes, but rather by a small metal ring, which lets the sheath dangle and swivel to make it easier to move and sit with the knife on your belt.Scandinavian knife blades have what is known as a scandinavian grind, which means that the knive only has one bevel, running from roughly the center of the knife to the edge. This is the defining characteristic of scandinavian knives, as most other types of knive blades have two bevels: one that slopes more gently towards the edge, and then another bevel that slopes more sharply to form the actual edge of the blade. Scandinavian blades are very easy to sharpen, and very difficult to sharpen incorrectly. You don't need any kind of pre-formed sharpening jig or device or tool kit, just a flat stone. Lay the knife blade on top of the stone, or lay the stone on the knife, tilted to follow the angle of the bevel, and start running it back and forth until it gets sharper. The knife controls the angle for you. This also makes it much easier to sharpen a blade in the field. Scandinavian knives are also superior for wood carving, as again the single-bevel design controls the angle for you.The "Leuku 145" is a traditional design for a larger scandinavian knife, with a larger and wider blade than many of the other Ahti knives. The longer and thicker handle is sized for larger hands and it features formed impressions at the front and back to offer better grip and control when using it for heavier tasks.Below are the detailed measurements of this knife. One important note: for best comfort and grip, the length of your middle finger should be similar to the circumference of the handle.Blade Material: 0.8% high carbon steel, hardened to 59 RockwellKnife Length: 10.25 inches (26 cm)Blade Length: 5.75 inches (14.6 cm)Blade Width: 1 inch (2.5 cm)Blade Thickness: 0.12 inches (3 mm)Knife Weight: 7.1 ounces (201 grams)Handle Length: 4.5 inches (11.4 cm)Pommel: brass butt plateHandle Circumference: 4.5 inches (11.4 cm)Handle Material: stained curly birchSheathed Weight: 9.4 ounces (266 grams)Sheathed Length: 11 inches (27.9 cm)Belt Loop Width: 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) Ahti knives are manufactured in Kauhava, Finland, which has a long and rich history of being known for knife making.
