Description: The Penny Magazine 23 issues with illustrated articles on birds 1832-1839! This is a collection of issues of a weekly London paper which are all over 175 years old! They are printed in a small format, measuring 7 by 11 in size, and each issue is 8 pages long. They came from bound volumes and have typical minor disbinding marks at the spine. These all of the issues are in worn condition and have some flaws, such as age browning, short tears or stains, but are still in easily readable shape, and the illustrations remain reasonably attractive. (See photos.) All the issues in this collection were published in the 1830s. The Penny Magazine was put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Their paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. These particular issues have been collected together because they all contain articles illustrated with woodcut engravings which are about birds in the 1830s. Some of the texts are short, but others go into into good detail on their subjects. In 19 of the papers, the bird-related engravings are on the front page, with these titles: ** The Ostrich of South Africa ** Birds of Paradise ** Toucans ** Voracity of the Adjutant Crane ** The White Stork ** The Flamingo ** The Eagle ** The Jungle Cock ** The Grouse of Europe ** The Grouse of Europe pt. II ** The White or Barn Owl ** The Lammergeyer, or Bearded Vulture ** The Hoopoe ** The Ruff and Reeve ** On the Horned Pheasants of the High Mountains of India ** Birds' Nests [of the Oriole] ** The Podargus Papuensis [goatsucker, or night-jar] ** The Bottle Tit and Nest ** British Birds [pied & spotted fly-catchers] Four of the papers have their avian illustrations on the back page, along with articles on the birds they show: ** The Chaja and Its Young ** The Cereopsis of New Holland [Australia; Cape Barren goose] ** Trogons ** Humming-birds See the accompanying photos to view the avian illustrations in each of the issues in this large collection of antique papers, which should give you a good idea of what is included in the lot.
