Description: This is an antique polychrome plate in the CANTON pattern from the Dutch Glass and Pottery Company Petrus Regout & Co. They were located in Maastricht, Holland. The plate measures approximately 8.5 inches in diameter. The Sphinx maker’s mark on the back dates this plate to about 1883. The Chinoiserie pattern (A European interpretation of Asian culture and decorative arts ) is called Timor. (An oriental design that tells a story from a 13th century Chinese play ) The Royal Sphinx factory was established by Petrus Regout in 1834. It was located in Maastricht, Holland. Production gradually was adapted to higher standards thanks to hired British specialists to compete with popular British creamware. Plate is in good antique pre-owned condition. It does show wear consistent with age and use. Some of the paint has worn off (note red on roof). There are utensil marks present. There is a small nick to the underside edge of the plate.
