Description: LA BRUYERE, Jean de The Characters of Theophrastus translated from Greek with the Characters or Customs of this century. Tenth edition. In Paris, at Estienne Michallet, 1699 1 large volume in-12 (163 x 105 mm | Margin height: 158 mm) of (32)-52-662-XLIV-(6) pages. This is the last edition published by the bookseller Estienne Michallet who died a few weeks later (September 30, 1699).La Bruyère had nine original editions published between 1688 and 1696 by the bookseller Estienne Michallet. The ninth and final original edition was revised and corrected by La Bruyère. The eighth and ninth editions are more than double the size of the first. The first edition contained 420 characters while the eighth contained 1120 in 1694. For 17 years La Bruyère would add and polish his maxims and characters of the man of his century. It is also the author's only work, that of a whole life. The Characters of La Bruyère are preceded by the Characters of the Greek Théophraste. Our edition, the tenth, takes up the text of the ninth, with the Speech delivered in the French Academy on Monday, June 15, 1693. The privilege is that of September 24, 1693, registered on March 4, 1694. "These are not, for the rest, maxims that I wanted to write, [...] custom dictates that, like oracles, they should be short and concise; some of these remarks are, some others are more extensive: things are thought of in a different way, and they are explained in a completely different way." (extract from the Preface). The fine and satirical observation of the different types of human characters and behaviors embraces all themes, namely: human nature, society and its customs, social criticism, morality, psychology, satire, the human condition, virtue and vice, etc. La Bruyère devotes a long chapter to women and affairs of the heart.
