Description: This is a very unique one of a kind piece of art in wonderful condition. Not only is this antique secretary desk/chest heavily carved and decorated but it also tells a story. The front is the depiction of Persephone being taken in the marriage of Hades. Her mother Demetry is present with a beast by her side. I don’t know all of the characters on the drawers. I have done some research and it’s extremely interesting. I believe the faces on the drawers are the 3 judges of the underworld. Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Aeacus. There are carvings of seasons all over.. the suns, autumn. The handles are snakes on fall leaves. Fruit is carved along the sides. The top locks and there is a separate key for the door on the inside of desk. The drawers all have locks but the mechanisms need replaced. There have been wheels placed on the feet. One foot has been repaired. Just a slice of the outer leg separated. It does not effect the stability or looks in any way. One piece of wood in the letter slots is broke. See pics. And there is a circular wearing on top. The drawers slide very nicely and smooth. It has been taken well care of. This is a very special desk. It is a story of love, and sacrifice and the changing of seasons. I was told it was created in the early 1900s or late 1800s. I would assume a wedding present perhaps.
