Description: DESCRIPTION Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound 'The 'Albion' Edition'. Bound in full-tree calf with gilt design around margins of boards, as well as on spine. Illustrations include a frontispiece to both the 'Iliad' and the 'Odyssey' as well as numerous in-text illustrations by John Flaxman. This is a wonderfully illustrated edition of Homer's 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey', the ancient Greek epics which are attributed to Homer. These works are among the oldest works of Western literature, and tell the tales of the Trojan War as well as the life adventures of King Agamemnon, Achilles, and Odysseus. Translated by Alexander Pope (1688-1744). Pope was fascinated by Homer since childhood and decided to translate these works as a result. His translations of the 'Iliad' and the 'Odyssey' were originally published between 1715-1720 and 1725-1726, respectively. With notes and an introduction by Rev. Theodore Alois Buckley (1825-1856), a translator of Homer and other classical works. Illustrations by John Flaxman (1755-1826), a British sculptor who was the leading figure in European Neoclassicism. Undated, so dated from Jisc from an identical copy held at the University of Edinburgh Libraries. Collated, complete.
