The flavor is quite strong, relatively sweet, and makes a lovely addition to any dish that uses basil. Add it to vinegar and it imparts a purple tinge. I have found it to be great in pesto as it does not lose it's purple color when crushed. Flowers are lilac in color and sit atop red stems.
