Obtain detailed instructions from www.writtenheritagebooks.com (Whispering Wind CRAFTS Annual # 7: Heddle Loom Beadwork by John Lotter).Bead Weaving Heddle: In setting up a bead loom with a heddle, alternate warp threads (the ones running lengthwise on the loom) are strung on the loom either through the holes or through the slits of the heddle. The heddle moves up and down, separating the warp threads and forming a "shed." A bead-strung weft thread is passed through this shed (Sticking the bead-strung weft thread needle into an eraser of a pencil placed into the shed works good to pull the needle and weft thread through the shed). When the heddle position is reversed, the weft thread is locked in place.Helpful InformationUse a heddle that is large enough for your planned beadwork. To maintain the balance of the heddle it is best to string the bead loom and heddle working from the outer side toward the middle. The middle of your planned beadwork should be at the center of the heddle. The outer side of the heddle used should be the outer side of the planned beadwork. The warp threads are strung through the holes and slots of the heddle. Continue stringing each thread toward the center of the heddle, from one side, then the other, maintaining as even a tension as possible. This may take some time and patience to complete. A separator rod is a 3/4” piece of dowel rod, pointed at both ends, a little longer than the width of the intended piece of beadwork, and merely serves to hold the warp threads (shed) apart, thus freeing both hands. Use a Polyester thread (V46), for both the warp (the long threads) and the weft (the cross threads). Using double weft threads makes for a very strong piece of beadwork. Nylon thread (NYMO) is a bit too stretchy and can cause bunching of the beadwork when it is taken from the loom. Material: Hand crafted from wood.
