Bert Lown was born in White Plains, New York June 6th 1903 He began as a sideman playing the violin in Fred Hamm's band. In the 1920s and 1930s he led a series of jazz-oriented dance bands (the most famous being the Biltmore Hotel Orchestra) He made a large number of recordings in the 1920's and 1930's. In 1925, Lown (with Hamm, Dave Bennett, and Chauncey Gray) composed the well-known standard "Bye Bye Blues." He also wrote some other songs, including "You're The One I Care For" and "Tired." The band has a wonderful drive, thanks mainly to the very well recorded guitar of Tommy Felline. The sax section is punched along and given considerable depth by Adrian Rollini's prominently featured bass sax. Rollini also plays vibraphone in some places. By the mid-1930s Lown quit leading the orchestras, becoming a booking agent and manager. Eventually he left the music industry and moved on to executive positions in the television industry. He died of a heart attack age 59 on November 20th 1962 in Portland, Oregon. The 4 CD’s are dedicated to the recordings of Bert Lown and His Hotel Biltmore Orchestra recorded from 1929 to 1933.
