Description: Don't rub your eyes. This is the original promo tee for PCPPEP, which I believe I still have on vinyl somewhere in my dusty old collection. If you ever owned it, you'll recall the lime green color, as well as the iconic artwork. Paul Leary told the story recently, actually, in an interview available on YouTube. The album was going to press and the artwork still hadn't been conceptualized. Leary literally sketched the clown, giving the finger, freehand in a matter of seconds and submitted it to the art department. And there you have it: the classic image so familiar to many a Buttholes fan. And what an album. It was the band's early daze, before people really knew what to expect from a live show (if you listen to "Hey," someone in the crowd, immediately after the song ends, can be heard shouting "Make it Stop!"). This particular tee was purchased originally at a show in San Francisco when the band played with the Dead Kennedys (possibly the gig that led to them signing with Alternative Tentacles). At the time when a piece of merch like this would have been (in a limited way) distributed, the Buttholes were known for touring relentlessly. I caught them whenever they came through Boston, once at the Channel in the late 80s and then again at (I think) the Middle East. They had the two drummers then, King Coffey and Teresa Nervosa, and the movie screen behind them, upon which they projected a series of increasingly disturbing images (eye operations, sex change operations, etc.). How they got that footage, pre-internet, is anyone's guess. The shows back then were an all out assault on your senses: loud as f*ck, strobe lights, sweaty bodies all packed together, all of us tripping on one thing or another--it was totally nuts. So suffice it to say, finding this was like finding the holy grail of Buttholes tees. Perfectly broken in to absolute vintage perfection, what we have here is a vintage large FOTL, which means that it fits like a dream--like Marlon Brando in Streetcar Named Desire or James Dean in Rebel without a Cause (only this one's green instead of the classic white). It's very soft and completely flawless--minimally worn and then tucked away, in a cool dry place, for decades. Unbelievable. Single stitched, of course, doubtless the only one left in circulation, so please--try to resist the urge to lowball me on this one. I paid dearly for it, trust me. A true collector's item. Drug-takingly dope!
