Eric Clapton recorded arguably his best work under extreme mental and physical struggles. After he fell in love with his best friends wife, he attempted to pour out his pain and emotion into a collection of songs that would some how get her attention. It worked, it just took a few years.The core group that made up Derek & The Dominos got their start on the road with Delaney & Bonnie. With Jim Gordon on drums, Carl Radle on bass, Bobby Whitlock on piano/organ, and Eric on guitar; they backed up the husband and wife band on their European tour. From there they took part in recording sessions for George Harrison’s album All Things Must Pass. A better warm up for a band just couldn’t be duplicated. They soon made their way back to the states to begin work on their own album. With producer Tom Dowd they settled into Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida. One major piece of the Derek & The Dominos band entered the picture during these sessions: Duane Allman. Producer Tom Dowd was working with the Allman Brothers when he got a call that Eric and the band were heading to Miami to record. Duane mentioned to Tom that he would love to drop in on the sessions to watch. He did much more than that, Duane ended up recording guitar parts with Clapton that remain some of the best playing ever committed to tape. Clapton would never again play with the fire he had while trading licks with Duane Allman.
