After serving in the Navy during WW1, he settled in Chicago, studied at the AIC, and worked as an interior decorator. While based there, he made painting trips to southern California and ultimately settled there in 1953. He continued to made trips back to Illinois and Indiana to paint. Derk Smit was a member of the Hoosier Salon and won 6 awards there between 1953 and 1968. He was best known for impressionist landscapes, influenced by Dutch and Flemish masters. His most desired paintings are those of Brown County, Nashville, and California, plein air landscapes with bold colors. He died in Santa Barbara, CA in 1984.
