Description: Carved FemaleDogon PeoplesSeno PlainsMaliWest Africa e. 20th century Carved Wood 21” tall x 4” x 4" Collected by naturalist and philanthropist, Eli Weiss in the 1980’s. Highly Stylized Seated Female with two children at her side.Beautifully carved abstract and angular style found among the Dogon inhabiting the Seno Plains of Mali.Carved from a single column of wood the seated form is strong in positive and negative space.Dogon patrons commissioned maternity figures to express a prayer to be blessed with children. Placed on altars, these sculptures would function as a surrogate for their patron and as an expression of their prayer. Representing a female figure holding twins. Among the Dogon, the depiction of twins has often been described as a reference to a myth of origin recorded by anthropologist Marcel Griaule in 1948 in his conversation with the elder Ogotemmêli. In this Tellem-Dogon piece, the sculptor combines imagery of motherhood and twinness producing a particularly charged object, one that speaks to the patron’s intimate yearning and a society’s beginnings.
