Description: This is an early patchwork quilt in the churndash pattern. As you can see the maker used tiny scraps of fabric to accomplish the pattern. Those scraps are sometimes 1840s fabrics. This and other details lead me to think that this is the work of a young woman learning how to quilt, more likely being shown how to quilt and practicing. CONDITION: This quilt has overall light dirt and very light water stains. Since all the browns are in tact, I would not wash it unless that could be done by an expert. There is one small area of current stitching done in white thread apparently to hold together pieces where the original stitching gave way. There is also light staining at the center fold. Clearly this has been in storage for a long time. Also there is light bleeding of brown dyes on the reverse. And the edging is very frayed. ALL OF THAT NOTWITHSTANDING, this is a wonderful piece that tells its own story. There is a deliberate humility square in the upper left. There are 30 churndash blocks. This is medium light weight. There two worn blocks in the center, probably caused by sitting in a folded position for way too long. The reverse shows competent quilting in rows with unexpected areas of floral and wreath quilting designs that have nothing to do with the frontal pattern. These look to me like practice, like a sampler of techniques to be learned. All of the fabrics are calicos, no ginghams. Look at the photos carefully. Thanks for looking into my auctions.
