Description: Rare Long WWI Battlefield Souvenir Trench Art Copper Artillery Shell Driving Band Shrapnel Letter Opener, from LOOS, FRANCEDESCRIPTION: Scans show it all.....section of copper driving band off a WWI artillery shell that was picked up on the French battlefield of Loos during the war and made into a great looking souvenir letter opener to sell to the army troops. These were mostly picked up by and made by civilians and mostly sold to German troops. Most of these are now found in German collections, and some have iron cross motifs, confirming that this type was commonly sold to German troops. The driving band engaged the rifling in the cannon barrel for increased accuracty, and the notches can still be seen in the handle. When the shell exploded, this also became shrapnel and broke into pieces. Easy to pound into nice flat scimitar blades like this one and perfect for souvenir trench art letter openers. This has been in my collection for many years. Measures about 6" long overall and the blade is about 1" wide. Fancy blade has nice floral/ivy decorations as well, as well as LOOS, the battlefield where it was found. Excellent condition overall with nice aged patina. It has a great look to it and is a great battlefield found trench art piece.A great piece for display, for use, or as an important part of any WWI collection. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS!!!SHIPPING TERMS: Buyer pays $7.50 postage in the US.
