Description: Fantastic historical Carl XV (1826 - 72) Agricultural Exhibition in Göteborg Award Silver medal, dated 1871. The Diameter of the Medal is 43 mm, and it weighs about 36.8 g. The Medalist is the noted Swedish artist Lea Ahlborn. The Obverse of the medal features the Bust of Carl XV, right, and the Lettering around reads: CARL XV SVERIGES OCH NORRIGES KONUNG. The engraver's name, LEA AHLBORN, is below the neck. The Reverse contains 6 lines of text within an oak wreath with the Inscription: BELÖNINIGMEDALJ VID ALLMÄNNA LANDTBRUKSMÖTET I GÖTEBORG 1871 (AWARDS MEDAL AT THE GENERAL AGRICULTURAL MEETING IN GOTHENBURG 1871.) A bit of history. King Carl XV of Sweden reigned from July 8, 1859 until his death on September 18, 1872. At his death he was succeeded by his brother Oscar II. An interesting fact: No subsequent King of Sweden to this day has been one of Charles' descendants. However, his descendants are or have been in the thrones of Denmark, Luxembourg, Greece, Belgium and Norway Lea Ahlborn was a famous Swedish artist. She was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, and the first woman to be appointed Royal Printmaker. The position of Royal Printmaker was a public office, and thereby it also made her the first female official in Sweden. She was hired by the United States government to make the medal of George Washington for the Centenary of the end of the War of Independence in 1883, and for the celebration of Christopher Columbus' discovery of America in 1892.
