Description: The FILA brand, today international in scope, was actually founded by the Fila brothers in 1911 in the Piedmont region of Italy. It originally provided ski and winter apparel to European elites who favored the exclusive nearby resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo, in the shadow of the Matterhorn, or the legendary resort of Zermatt, just on the other side of the border in Switzerland. In the 1970s the brand decided to expand into sportswear, particular tennis clothing, and sponsored first, the Swedish winner of five Wimbledon’s, Bjorn Borg, and then Boris Becker, the youngest ever Wimbledon champion. As a result, FILA successfully became the most important brand in tennis. This mens polo shirt was made in Italy during the heyday of the Italian brand. Failed later expansions led to its sale to an American private equity firm, and then finally to its acquisition by a South Korean company in 2007. Thus, this item should not be compared with current Fila offerings which are oriented to the mass market which follows other sports such as soccer. Made in Italy of fine knit cotton in a classic style with tipped collar and sleeve cuffs, and a contrasting collar placket, this polo is best suited to post match settings where its timeless elegance and fine tailoring can be seen up close.
