Description: Florida Anise (Illicium floridanum) flowering evergreen shrub root-stock 10-pack. This American native evergreen shrub grows in a small area of the southeast United States, Gulf Coast area in the tip of the Florida panhandle, in southern Alabama from the border area of Georgia where it is considered to be endangered, and into Mississippi and Louisiana. It thrives in partial to fully shaded, filtered-light conditions on the floors and edges of the woods. It can grow in more sunlit areas, but it does need to have adequate organic matter and moisture. Illicium floridanum has a magnificently clean, fresh and attractive scent year-round. The scent can be captured in tinctures and enjoyed at any time of day or night. The beautiful dark-red, star-shaped flowers typically emerge in the early days of March. Illicium floridanumshould not be ingested, and it is toxic and not an alternative to a culinary spice (in contrast to the Chinese plant known as Illicium verum which is used as a spice, and the oil of which is used in medicine and to flavor alcoholic beverages). This beautiful and fragment native shrub is an excellent alternative or supplement to other flowering shrubs, such as azaleas and camellias, for ornamental yard plants.
