George Orwell Animal Farm 1st American Edition 1st Print/State $1.75 HCDJ 1946

Description: In its original first state dust jacket (Priced $1.75 and without "Printed in the USA" on rear fly leaf), this is a first printing/first state of the stated First American Edition of Animal Farm (NY, Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1946) by George Orwell, his classic political satire. Presumably this is also either a review or prepublication gift copy. The second FEP bares a green stamped Christmas message (see photo) comparing the book to an Aesop Fable or Alice in Wonderland and “I hope your holiday happiness will be increased by its perusal” with a printed autograph below of B Earl Puckett. Puckett was chairman of the Allied Stores Corporation, one of the nation's largest department‐store chains at that time. Typically a publisher issues advance review copies but, in view of the unique stamped message, this has all the ear marks of a prepublication or advertising copy. . The book is in very good condition. Binding is well intact and reasonably firm, not as tight as fine. Exterior boards are very nice with no bumped corners. Gold spine lettering is rubbed in a couple of spots over “Animal” and publisher name at heel. Page ends are ever so slightly toned. Interior is very good with no errant marks or names and a “First Edition” to top corner of FFEP. End sheets are very clean with no shadows or stains. In an archival cover, the first state dust jacket is priced and in good condition with small chips to heel, crown, corners and edges as well as some wrinkles (see photos).
