Description: Say what you want about GG Allin, but a poseur he was not. "Shock rockers" like Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson--they played dress up, cultivated stage personas, which is fine, but they weren't genuine. Hank Williams, Blaze Foley, GG Allin--these guys were genuine, even if the latter was markedly more controversial. If you've never seen "Hated," it's definitely worth a watch. He'd just gotten out of prison (assault, he claimed it was consensual) and instead of attempting to clean up his act, he immediately violates his parole so that he can go on tour. That same year, he begins threatening to kill himself onstage, specifically on Halloween, but every time the holiday rolled around, for one reason or another, he was back in jail. Of course the rumored threat only increased ticket sales: even without cell phone cameras, fans lined up for a chance to witness Allen committing suicide in front of a live crowd (so the fans were arguably complicit, at least to some degree). Though he never got the chance to make good on his promise, his final show and its aftermath (clips of which you can find on YouTube) were a spectable to say the least. June 27, 1993. The show at the Gas Station in New York ended early and abruptly, as usual, and the chaos spillied out into the street, where Allin immediately began molesting passersby and provoking mayhem, generally. The entourage stumbled down the street (the middle of it, mostly), before finally flagging down a cab (which took a while for obvious reasons) and then off they go to score heroin. Having overdosed, Allen was found dead the next day, still reeking of blood and feces from the night before. And because he'd left longstanding instructions not to wash his corpse once he died, he was still covered in fluids for his own funeral. He was 36 years old. So, again, say what you want about GG Allin, but he was no phony. Just ask Holden Caulfield. Chaotically dope.
