Description: Cold cuts from Richard of Haldingham's Herford map from the 13th century. century Original print from a book from 1903 (not a reprint) The Hereford map is the largest complete mappa mundi, a medieval world map. It was built at the end of the 13th century. Century, probably between 1285 and 1295, painted on calf parchment measuring 135 cm × 165 cm. The author (more like the client) was Richard of Haldingham and Lafford (now Holdingham and Sleaford), known as Richard de Bello, canon of Lincoln around 1283 and prebendary and canon of the Episcopal Church of Hereford from 1305, died after 1313. The map is on display in Hereford and has been a world heritage site since 2007. As a typical mappa mundi, it is a “world painting” with the aim of presenting creation and the history of salvation in an instructive manner and is therefore only slightly committed to geography as we understand it today. In the card legend, the author Richard (who, unusually in medieval pictures, mentions himself by name) turns to the viewers of this story to ask Jesus for mercy for him.
