Description: Viareggio is a city and commune in northern Tuscany, Italy, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. With a population of over 62,000, it is the second largest city within the province of Lucca, after Lucca. It is known as a seaside resort as well as being the home of the famous carnival of Viareggio parade along the promenade known as “Passeggiata a mare” in the weeks of Carnival. The city traces its roots back to the first half of the 16th century when it became the only gate to the sea for the Republic of Lucca. The oldest building in Viareggio, known as “Torre Matilde”, dates back to this time and was built by the Lucchessi in 1541. The city’s shipbuilding industry and fishing has long been renowned around the world and is still a fundamental sector to the city’s economy. This is a card, postmarked, 1912 in Viareggio to Chicago, captures “Entrata di Vele in Porto”, the “Entry of Sails into Port” through one of the several canals that connect Viareggio to the Mediterranean. The card is in good condition with a large crease lower right corner but otherwise just minor wear. The image is clean and clear. The reverse has a neatly written message and is clean. It is missing the stamp.
