Portfolio 17 X 12". Images in excellent condition, just one with some foxing; portfolio loose at binding, some sheets separated, but all sheets intact. Normal toning to front and back boards, chipping to corners. A rare complete set of Pann's lithographs in such fine condition. More pictures available upon request. This is a remarkable portfolio of chromolithographs of biblical scenes. Pann, born in Latvia, moved to Paris in 1903 to study with William-Adolphe Bouguereau at the French Academy, living in a building also occupied by Chagall and Modigliani. In 1913, at the invitation of Boris Schatz, he traveled to Jerusalem to teach at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. He spent WWI back in Europe, creating paintings depicting Jewish suffering in the ghettos and posters supporting the French war effort. Back in Jerusalem in 1920, and with a lithographic press he purchased in Europe (likely the first in Palestine!), he devoted himself to lithography and created the striking images in this volume. Influenced by the Art Nouveau and Symbolist movements, Pann's intention was to create illustrations for a complete Bible, but plans changed and this set of 25 lithographs was produced. He thought most biblical art "boring...and tiresome", and set to infuse humanity and vitality into his Biblical images. An utterly unique creation of one of the fathers of Israeli/Zionist art. His work is held by a number of Israeli art museums and by collectors around the world. Pann's work was featured at an exhibition at Duke University called "The Illustrated Hebrew Bible". I believe there is a later edition of these images simply called "The Bible".
