Description: Italian Emilian 17th Century Old Master Painting Saint Jerome in the Wilderness Italian Emilian Region 17th Century Old Master Oil on Canvas Painting of Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, circa 1630, Baroque Period Italian Emilian (today Emilia-Romagna) Region 17th Century Old Master Oil on Canvas Painting of Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, circa 1630, Baroque Period. The Emilian region of artists produced several important artist during the 16th and 17th Century, in particular members of the Caracci family and Guercino. In fact, this region, and in particular, Bologna became a center of painting that rivaled Florence and Rome. This is a common depiction of Saint Jerome, he is often wearing red, a symbol for him being an early Doctor of the Church (sometimes also depicted as a cardinal), but here he is depicted in the wilderness, you can see a volcano in the center left and he appears to be in his cave surrounded by the "tamed" lion on the left side (he supposedly tamed a lion in the wilderness while he was in the Syrian desert). Other common aspects of his depiction are included here: he surrounded by books and the equipment of a scholar in a rocky desert with him studying or praying under the shelter of a rock-face or cave mouth. The subject of "Jerome Penitent", like here, first appears in the later 15th century in Italy; in the desert, wearing ragged clothes, naked above the waist. His gaze is usually fixed on a crucifix and he may beat himself with his fist or a rock. Here he is also depicted with a vanitas element, with a skull symbolizing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, and thus the vanity of ambition and all worldly desires. Saint Jerome (B. 342, d. 420). Also known as Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus; or Jerome of Stridon. He was know early Christian priest, confessor, theologian, translator, and historian. Due to his work, Jerome is recognized as a saint and Doctor of the Church by the Catholic Church, and as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Lutheran Church, and the Anglican Communion. His feast day is 30 September. Source: Wikipedia, 2024 Measurements: Frame: 21 1/4 x 25 1/4 inches; Painting: 15 1/4 x 19 1/4 inches Weight: 10 lb 1 oz Condition: Good condition.
