Description: A pair of solid brass oil lamps originally used in a butsudan or Buddhist temple. They were brought from Kyoto, Japan. The cup hanging from the birds mouth could have up to five burning oil wicks. These burning wicks would get their oil from in the cup through capillary action. They're 10 1/2 inches tall and weigh just under 2 1/2 pounds This is a beautiful example of Japanese folk art.A handmade backpack used in the country side for going in the forest and carrying firewood back to their village or home. This came from an antiques auction in the Kansai area of Japan. Like many things in Japan it was both useful and a thing beauty. It's obvious that when this was made, the maker took pride in their weaving ability. The body of the backpack is meant to cushion the fire wood tied with the straw ropes on the other side. To strengthen the shoulder straps, various scraps of cotton cloth was woven in with the rice straw. This would most likely be from the early 1900's Including the top of the straps it's 15 inches high. The base of the body is 11 inches across.
