Olive cloth, covers stamped in blind with ruled and floral borders surrounding small central stamps of "The Great Tree" (gilt on the front, blind on the rear). Partially faded, especially from a little damping to the spine. Very good with some staining to inner margins of leaves. A very nice association copy, inscribed in another hand to the leading American paleontologist, "James Hall Esq with the respects of", then signed by the author, "J.C. Warren." Warren was president of the Boston Society of Natural History and concerned to document the history of this beloved Boston Common focal point, which a storm felled in 1876. Scion of a family of physicians that included the Revolutionary War patriot, Joseph Warren, John Collins Warren was himself a doctor who brought treatment innovations, helped to found Massachusetts General Hospital, taught at Harvard, and founded the New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery.
