The scene depicts a meadow lined with trees in late autumn. Through the branches a quaint cottage can be seen in the near distance. The artist demonstrates an accomplished hand in capturing the light within the scene, showing dappled sunlight reflecting from the yellow leaves and soft shadows to the ground. There is an unfinished oil sketch to the back of the canvas showing various angles of a life model. Presented in a light wooden frame with ornate carvings. Unsigned. Provenance: from the collect of Sylvia Percival Prescott, daughter of Archibald and Josephine Haswell-Miller. On canvas. Condition There are some minor areas of paint loss to the very edges of the canvas, with more wear to the corners. Light discolouration caused by surface dirt. Some minor wear to the frame.Biography Josephine Haswell Miller nee Cameron was a painter and etcher in Glasgow, who studied at Glasgow School of Art under Robert Anning Bell and Maurice Greiffenhagen. She exhibited at the GI, RA, RSA, Walker Art Gallery, in the provinces and in the USA. She was married to the artist A. E. Haswell Miller and lived in Scotland for some years, later settling in Gillingham, Dorset. Miller was a member of the SSA and Glasgow Society of Lady Artists and examples of her work are in the collections of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, City of Edinburgh Council, Hunterian and Perth and Kinross Council.
