LADY'S HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITION On Wonderful A/S CLAPSADDLE Vintage 1909 Postcard

Description: Up for bid is a wonderful vintage Halloween postcard. Ellen Clapsaddle, one of the most talented and prolific artists of vintage postcards, has marvelously illustrated an old Halloween superstition: "If a maiden looks in a mirror on Halloween at midnight while holding a candle, the face of her future lover will then appear next to hers in the mirror." SOURCE: "POSTCARDS PORTRAY HALLOWEEN CUSTOMS OF THE PAST" by Roy Nuhn The Antique Trader Weekly, October 27, 1982. In this scene, a lovely young post-Victorian era lady wearing period sleepwear holds a lit jack 'o-lantern as she peers into a mirror. Give yourself a Halloween treat and supersize image 1 so you can see what she's up to. She's purposely positioned the mirror so it will show an image of the man in the picture behind her, probably her lover. The detail on this card is exceptional! Clapsaddle's signature appears at the lower-right corner. Printed in pre-WWI Germany, and published by S. Garre in 1908 (their logo appears at the lower-left corner), this beautifully embossed postcard has been posted, and has a 1909 cancellation across the one-cent stamp on the divided back. Here's a wonderful vintage postcard that can be framed for decoration, given as a thoughtful gift, or to add to your Halloween or Clapsaddle postcard collection. Don't get scared away--bid now!
