Description: Les Etiquettes des Grands Crus Classes du Medoc De Etiketten van de Grands Crus Classes van de Medoc The Labels of the Grands Crus Classes of the Medoc Die Etiketten der Grands Crus Classes der Medoc by Cees Kingmans Preface by Bruno Prats Editions Ton Borghouts First Edition? Description: Large hardback book published by Editions Ton Borghouts in 1993. This book gives short histories and displays the labels of the Bordeaux Chateaux that were included in the 1855 ranking of the best wines of Bordeaux. I have also included twenty-seven examples of labels I removed from bottles that I drank of Chateaux in the book. Two labels, Leoville Barton and Langoa Barton, are signed by Anthony Barton, owner of the properties. This book repeats the text in four languages, French, Dutch, English, and German. From the Preface (partial): Those who bring new wines into the international market probably spend as much time on the creation of labels as they do on the supervising of their vinification efforts. The custom of labeling the Crus Classes started quite naturally and gradually as the traditional storage and transport of wines in cask began to give way to bottling at the chateau. Mr. Cees Kingman's book is a pleasurable invitation to partake of this transition. The more experienced enthusiast will recognize the famous labels, which constitute the glory of his cellar, instantly. The curious reader will compare the old prints of the chateaux with the beautiful recent photos, will discover the meaning of the expression "Grand Vin", and will unravel the coats of arms of long forgotten owners. ... Bruno Prats, President du Syndicat des Grands Crus Classes du Medoc en 1855 (et en 1973 pour les premiers crus) From the Introduction (partial): Although enjoying wine is one of my best developed interests, I also derive a considerable amount of pleasure from the labels. The label on a bottle of wine primarily serves to provide the customer with information about, among others, the region of origin, the name of the responsible wine grower, and the harvest year. The label is a source of information and a reference, and thus it constitutes a liaison between the owner of the domain and the wine lover. However, the label also has some sentimental value, as it is the only tangible reminder after drinking a good glass of wine, a nice dinner, or pleasurable company, and quite often a combination of these three elements. It is therefore, not without reason that wine-lovers collect and cherish the labels of their favorite wines. Of all the wines in the world, the Grand Crus Classes du Medoc are known best. Although people in Bordeaux had already begun putting labels on wine bottles before the classification of 1855, the necessity of this did not arise until the bottling of the wine at the chateau itself became customary. ...
