In his memoirs, Colonel Tavakoli relates the inside details of the revolution, his assumption of the leadership of the Iranian military and his talks and relations with leaders of the new government including extensive meetings with the Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini. He trained as an officer at Irans Military Academy and at the French Military Academy at Saint-Cyr. In 1979, after the fall of the Shah, because of his nationalistic credentials, Colonel Tavakoli became the first chief of staff of the Islamic Republic.
