Description: DC COMICS DC Comics | DC New Cinematic UniverseDarkseid: First Cover Appearance + Second Full Appearance One of four series created by comics legend JACK KIRBY as part of his "Fourth World" initiative for DC Comics, NEW GODS would tackle Kirby's concept head-on to more fully expand upon the Fourth World and its characters he originally introduced in the series Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen. The series protagonist was ORION, the son of DARKSEID, the evil despot ruler of Apokolips, and, within the story, the counterpart of SCOTT FREE a.k.a. MISTER MIRACLE. Just as Free was sent to live on Apokolips as boy, Orion was sent from Apokolips to be raised on New Genesis. From that upbringing, Orion's heroic nature was able to be nurtured and, as a man, he made it his personal mission to prevent Darkseid from ever possessing that which he most sought: the ANTI-LIFE EQUATION. Kirby's run on the title lasted for eleven (11) issues, until the series was cancelled in 1972. Like the other Fourth World titles, New Gods resumed publication under new creative direction for a second run of eight issues, ending with Issue #19 in August of 1978. Despite the series' starring character being Orion, fandom's focus was squarely on the evil lord Darkseid, a character whose power and malevolence would evolve him into one of the DC Universe's most powerful characters and ultimate villains. Indeed, it was New Gods that bolstered the concept of "The Dark Side" as something, or someone, to be taken seriously and which established "Darkseid" as a multiversal threat of galactic proportions. To Kirby, Darkseid was literally "evil itself." He was a murderer, but with class, and tremendous power and a cosmic viewpoint. To him, earth was nothing but a proving ground, one rife with potential to explore the nature of the power of the Anti-Life equation he so dauntlessly pursued. That equation, if he obtained it, would give Darkseid complete control over life and death itself. His control of Anti-Life would render everything in creation that wasn't Darkseid null and void, leaving only him in its place. In this way, Darkseid was the epitome of Narcissism, a being whose concepts of Right and Wrong, Good and Evil, transcended the more black-and-white morality of most comic book heroes and villains. Ultimately, while not the household name that many of Kirby's other creations have become -- Captain America, Thor, Mister Miracle -- Darkseid likely will remain Kirby's most complex and most fascinating character of them all. That being so, it's understandable that New Gods #2 (1971) found both its desirability and collectability thanks to Darkseid, as the issue would feature Darkseid's second full appearance in DC Comics as well as his FIRST COVER APPEARANCE, which likely caught the eyes of young DC fans eager to learn more about this unbelievable and terrible new cosmic villain as well as the war-torn planet and its ravaged, subjugated population over which he ruled.
