Description: Apollo 11 Vintage NASA "Red Number" Color Photo, Image AS11-40-5880: Aldrin's Boot and Footprint. An original chromogenic 8" x 10" print of Aldrin's photograph of his foot leaving an impression on the lunar soil as part of an experiment to study the nature of lunar dust and the effects of pressure on the surface. The dust was found to compact easily under the weight of the astronauts leaving a shallow but clear impression of the boots, characteristic of a very fine, dry material. On Kodak fiber-based paper bearing the "A Kodak Paper" watermark on the verso. I've identified three issues with this piece: 1) There is slight wrinkling of the photo, which can be seen in the scans provided, 2) there is (what I assume to be) a fingernail mark on the left-hand side of the photo which is on both the front and back and does pierce the paper, and 3) the NASA Red Number mark is faded - the last four numbers are barely legible. The photo has been placed in a plastic sleeve with a cardboard backer, then into a 8.5" x "11" rigid print protector for shipping. Due to the age of the photo, there is a slight amount of bowing. Any glare/discoloration is a result of the camera and not an issue with the piece itself, unless otherwise stated. We have a large collection of pictures that will be listed over time; a family member worked as JSC for 33 years and accumulated quite a collection of memorabilia while there. A good number of the pictures, we know what they are based on research, however, a lot of them, we do not and that will be disclosed in the description if need be.
