Description: The "Paragon" brand name was introduced in 1903 by the Star China Co of Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, and the star above the company name on the cup (as part of the mark )suggests this teacup/saucer may be quite early vintage. Since it does not include the "Made in England" reference that helps to date it to before1920, when the revised McKinley Tariff Act stipulated that all ceramics made for export had to include the "Made in ..." and country of origin. The other marks on the base are tally marks, added by the individual craftsmen that hand-finished the china. Various workers will have been involved in the making of this china, and each will have added a mark to the underside. The design is principally an underglaze transfer, but embellished (they sometimes called it "clobbering") by the addition of hand-applied detail, either in the form of the gilding, or with in-filling of areas of color. The hand-written number on the underside of the cups in red is the factory pattern number, and like the gilder's mark, will have been hand-applied by one of the factory workers who added areas of red to the pattern. The number on the base of the saucer should be the Design Registration Number, as recorded with the Patent Office. These numbers have not yet been fully digitized, so it's not yet possible to research each number individually without actually visiting the National Archives in Kew. So most likely this was produced between 1903-1920
