Paul Lauritz (1889 - 1975) - 'Crashing Waves' - Original California Oil Painting

Description: Paul Lauritz (Norwegian/American, 1889 - 1975) This oil on Masonite panel measures 9" x 12" or in the period gold frame dimensions of 16" x 19" and is signed lower left, Paul Lauritz. This circa 1950s/1960s oil painting of crashing waves along the California coast is a quintessential example of his work during this period. Biography: Born in the small art colony of Larvik, Norway on April 18, 1889, the son of Lauritz Olsen and his wife Maren Sofie, Lauritz was exposed to art at an early age, studying with local and foreign artists in Larvik. At sixteen, Lauritz immigrated to eastern Canada to live with his sister. He found work in the local mining operations, relying on the skills that he learned while working for his fathers mining operation back in Norway. Moving west, he lived briefly in Vancouver and then Portland, Oregon, where working as a commercial artist provided him only a meager existence. The Alaskan gold rush lured him north to Alaska in 1915 to try his hand at gold mining. However, after a few short years, mining for gold left him insolvent, so he turned to painting. While in Alaska he met fellow artist Sydney Laurence and they held an exhibition before Lauritz departed the Alaskan territory. In 1919 he settled in Los Angeles and established a studio-home in the Lyceum Theater on Spring Street. When not teaching at the Chouinard and Otis Institute or working in his studio, he made painting excursions to the Sierras, up the California coast as far north as Carmel, to Mexico, the Columbia River, and Norway. While in his native land, he was commissioned by the King of Norway to do a painting for the royal palace. Paul Lauritz was an active participant in the art scene in Los Angeles, joining numerous local and regional art organizations and serving on the Municipal Art Commission for many years. A versatile painter, his subjects include desert scenes, portraits, snow scenes, landscapes, coastal and seascapes. He was a member of the Royal Society of Artists, England, and the Society of Western Artists. His paintings were awarded numerous prizes and are in the collections of the Joslyn Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Art, Laguna Museum, University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Chicago as well as many other public and private collections. Paul Lauritz died at his home in Los Angeles on October 31, 1975.
