REVIEW: A very interesting collection of journalistic and fine art photographs and the philosophy of the photographer who took the pictures. Following WW II Converse helped pioneer using candid poses and natural light photography for his employer, The Christian Science Monitor. In some ways he could have been part of 1950's photojournalists joke comparing "Life Magazine" photographers with "National Geographic" photographers. The NGS photographers would stand on top of a pile of garbage and take beautiful landscapes. The "Life" photographers would just photograph the garbage. Gordon Converse would take beautiful, inspiring black and white pictures of the garbage, the surrounding environment, the garbage men and any of the many people picking through the trash searching for food or treasure. Gordon Noble Converse created his own niche in photojournalism. The readers of his newspaper loved seeing his pictures. He was eventually rewarded with the "National Press Photographer's Newspaper/Magazine of the Year Award." He illustrated many other books for the Christian Science Publishing Society. In addition to the photographs included in this coffee table book Converse shares some of the fascinating stories behind some of those same photographs. He was a perfectionist and actually destroyed those pictures that didn't meet his own high technical standards. He also enjoyed doing his own film processing and printing so that sloppy darkroom work didn't destroy the results of his unique way of seeing. He was the subject of a short documentary film entitled, "One Seeing..." Gordon Converse was a true craftsman that loved his work. Converse was following in the footsteps of other famous Bostonians and was considered the Paul Revere of his trade by many of the citizens of Boston." Rare Nest sells hard to find vintage photography, art catalogs, Chicago history and ephemera, art deco and artist-signed jewelry.
