Book with written by Almira Russel Hancock, wife of Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, and was published the year after his death. Winfield Scott Hancock (1824 - 1886) was a career U.S. Army officer and the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880. He served with distinction in the Army for four decades, including service in the Mexican American War and as a Union general in the American Civil War. Known to his Army colleagues as "Hancock the Superb", he was best remembered for his personal leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. His military service continued after the Civil War, as Hancock participated in the military Reconstruction of the South and the Army's presence at the Western frontier. . CONDITION: Overall condition is Near Fine with light bookshelf wear to spine edges. Cover is in the publisher's original green cloth with red, white and blue trefoil on the front cover. Binding is tight and paper is in very good condition with some light toning, as to be expected. INSCRIPTIONS: Volume has a personal inscription, written in pencil on the first page after the front cover, which reads: "Jno. M. Smith"" Book Dimensions: 9 3/8"H x 6 3/8"W x 1 1/8"D. 340 pages.
