Description: Robert Frank Les Americains The Americans 1958 True 1st Edition Les Americains. Photographs by Robert Frank. Texts in French by Simone de Beauvoir, Bernard Iddings Bell, Alain Bosquet, John Brown, Omar N. Bradley, Erskine Caldwell, John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, Andre Maurois, Henry Miller, Claude Roy, John Steinbeck, Walt Whitman, Richard Wright. Edited by Alain Bosquet. Encyclopedie Essentielle/Robert Delpire, Paris, 1958. First edition. Original edition. 174 pages. Oblong octavo. Glazed paper over boards. Cover design by Saul Steinberg. No dust jacket as issued. Numerous gravure reproductions. "...paved the way for three decades of photographs exploring the personal poetics of lived experience. Many memorable photobooks have been derived from this mass of material. None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Frank's masterpiece."--Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Vol. 1 Unlike the Grove Press edition published the following year, in legendary publisher Robert Delpire's first French edition--with its politically charged texts printed on pages facing the photos--Frank's acerbic documentary of post-war American life comes across more as a biting exposé of the ennui and provincialism lurking beneath the surface than as a "sad poem sucked out of America," in Kerouac's famous words. Good plus. Light wear to the boards. Small split along the spine near the bottom edge. Scratches visible in the light. Clean and bright. Spine lean. Few soil spots to the fore edges. Internally, unmarked. Tanning to page edges. Binding a little loose and fragile. Rough edges to some of the pages. Stray pencil marks to the white border on pages 55, 56, 74, and 102 which can be erased with care. Pages 5 through 14 are loose and have detached from the binding. The same is true of pages 27 and 28, 55 and 56, 77 and 78, 103 and 104, and 131 and 132. Page 103 has a rough edge near the fold as it did not detach neatly. It is also possible there are a few other loose or detached pages that I may have missed since I have handled the book with the utmost care. All of the loose or detached pages are as snug as possible making it unobtrusive. Few soil spots. Hinges sound. A very nice copy of this fragile book. The original edition. A classic.
