This piece is titled Slave Market with the Disappearing Bust of Voltaire An author, artist and provocateur, Salvador Dalí was one of the most notable figures of the Surrealist movement. Born in 1904 in Figueras, Catalonia, Dalí studied art in Madrid and Barcelona, where he demonstrated masterful painting skills and experimented with several artistic styles. The Slave Market is an excellent example of Dalí’s skill at creating paranoiac-critical hallucinations for his audience to share. For this particularly successful double-image, Dalí’s visualization of this apparition is created by incorporating the celebrated bust by the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, The Bust of Voltaire in 1778. In the composition, the arrangement of two Dutch women in the marketplace re-creates The Bust of Voltaire.
