Description: Texas Sesquicentennial 1836-1986 Charm for necklaceTX Flag Silver-Tone Vintage In 1836 the Republic of Texas army defeated the Mexican Army at San Jacinto. With the defeat Texas won its independence from Mexico. One hundred and fifty years later in 1986 Texas celebrated a centennial of freedom with a year-long state-wide celebration. In March 1986, this charm was purchased in downtown San Antonio at the Alamo Plaza on the day then Vice President George Bush made a speech in front of the Alamo. More than 3,000 flag-waving, cheering people visited the shrine of Texas liberty, where more than 180 defenders held off a Mexican army of 2,000 before being wiped out on March 6, 1836, four days after the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed. Bush, a former Texas congressman, and San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros retold the story of how the Alamo's defenders bought valuable time for General Sam Houston's Texas army, which a month later defeated the Mexican army at San Jacinto to win Texas' independence.
