Description: Vintage 1890-1910 C.E. Jennings Steer's Patent Expansive Wood Auger Bit ¾ to 3” Up for bid is a Vintage C.E. Jennings "Steer's Patent" Expansive Wood Auger Bit. It is fully adjustable from 3/4 inch all the way up to 3 inches. This expansive bit uses a worm screw to allow micro adjustment across the full range of the bit. This is accomplished by turning the screw on the side of the bit. This bit is used and will need some clean up but would consider in good condition. On the very early ones the name stamp was a simple single line with "Steers" and the patent date. The fit between the clamp and the movable cutter was very close and probably required hand fitting. Sometime later the company was sold to C.E. Jennings (no relation to Russell Jennings). After he bought the company they added the Jennings name to the bits. Later they made small modifications to the name stamp and details like the screw point shape. It appears they reset the serial numbers with each modification. They later had a new patent issued where they changed the clamping plate and movable cutter contact area, adding a bevel to the top edge where the side adjust screw goes. This allowed a looser fit and probably eliminated the hand fitting.
