Description: ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡This framed vintage etching is signed Ziegler '30 and shows a Rabbi wearing a tallit prayer shawl. The etching measures approximately 15 5/8" x 11 5/8" sightline and comes displayed in a gilt gesso wood frame measuring approximately 17..5" x 21.5".The artist is somewhat of a mystery, although I did find a few clues while researching this piece, including two other examples of this etching, one with a Hebrew word shown above the man and the other identical to this one, only undated and with a title plaque on the frame engraved S. Ziegler Devotion. Searching for that turned up one more clue: a 1951 catalog from the New York Graphic Society (est. 1925) titled "Fine Art Reproductions, Old & New Masters" with two artwork entries for S. Ziegler, one titled Devotion and the other Meditation. I also found a 1949 copyright listing for an S.P. Zeigler piece titled Meditation, although it is unknown if that refers to this same artist. Not perfect but gracefully worn by time, it shows signs of age wear including spot marks on the etching and staining on the mat..The paper has deeply tanned with age, and the frame has chipping on the corners and isn't a homogeneous gold gilt but was rubbed in places with red ochre which appears to be an intentional part of the design. While comparing this frame to those in Stuart Schneider's book on antique picture frames, I found two similar examples, one on page 31 dated 1840 and another on page 25 from circa 1830 which made me question whether the '30 date on this etching was for 1930 or possibly 1830. The etching appears to have been made using the soft-ground process which was widely used during the late 18th century to early 19th century and also experienced a revival in the early 20th century. Rabbinical art was also a common theme during both periods as well. The patina on the exposed wood and the cardboard backing suggests an early to mid 20th century date, so it seems more likely this Ziegler etching dates to 1930, although more research would need to be done to confirm this.It is a wonderful image --and I say this with the utmost respect, one that reminds me of The Dude in The Big Lebowski. The pictures are the best decription, so please click on them for a closer look, and if you have any questions, I'm always happy to help.
