Description: This item is previously owned by a collector who meticulously cared for and stored his Lionel collection. It appears to have been run sparingly, and it includes the original Hagerstown, Maryland, box. Please see photos for details. This is a vintage (1954) Lionel 6464-200 Pennsylvania Boxcar with the Type IV Body and Type IIA roof. The 200 Pennsylvania boxcar is known as the least decorated in the 6464 freight car series, yet it is still a favorite among collectors. It is hard to find, probably because it was never included in a Lional set. And it is even harder to find in good to excellent condition. The 200 featured a tuscan-painted shell with white lettering, sliding doors plus a single brake wheel. Early production versions (1954-1955) included the 'New 5-53' lettering to the left of the sliding door while later productions (1968-1969) don’t. Also, the earlier versions have a single block on the sliding doors and later versions have multi-block doors. The 1968-1969 productions are harder to find. The type IV body has three full columns of rivets to the right of the door, and the second and third rivet columns to the left of the door each had three rivets at the top and two at the bottom. The interior of the roof was ribbed. The 6464 freight car series is the most collected item ever made by Lionel. Colorful with numerous road names and great graphics, each box car is essentially a rolling billboard. They include different truck types (bar-end vs. AAR), door types (single vs. multi-block), rivets (varied rows and patterns), and internal mold designs. Production of these box cars allowed Lionel to market a realistic and almost scale-like box car never previously seen in the Lionel family. The 6464-style box cars were an immediate success and remained in the Lionel catalog until the final year of postwar production, 1969. Even today, all 6464-style box cars remain a favorite of collectors and operators. This is a rare find from a collector who meticulously cared for and stored his Lionel collection.
