Description: The SS Great Western was an iron-strapped, wooden, side-wheel paddle steamer, with four masts to hoist the auxiliary sails. It was the first steamship purpose-built for crossing the Atlantic, and was launched in July, 1837. She was the largest steamship passenger ship in the world until 1839, when the SS British Queen went into service. The hull was built of oak by traditional methods and she displaced 1,320 tons, was 212 feet (65 meters) long, and carried 148 passengers. The ship had four masts with reduced rigging and paddles that were driven by two engines. Her sails were not just to provide auxiliary propulsion, but also were used in rough seas to keep the ship on an even keel and to ensure that both paddle wheels remained in the water, driving the ship in a straight line. Its average speed without sails was 9 knots. On some of its final voyages, the SS Great Western carried troops to the Crimean War. The Great Western influenced the design of other Atlantic paddlers including Cunard's Britannia which was essentially a reduced version of the Great Western. This is a vintage 1980's kit in a box sealed with tape. Box edges have shelf wear and a few small dents. Based on the sound of the contents of the sealed box, the kit is unassembled. Uncertain of completeness. Selling as-is. See photos. Hard-to-find vintage kit.
