Description: c. 1930s/1940s Vintage ornately carved chest made from the wood of the camphor tree. Chests made out of camphorwood were a popular choice due to the oil that is extracted from the tree. It is a known insect repellent, and is especially effective with moths, and as such, these chests were desirable for garment or blanket storage. The carved scenes around the five visible sides of the chest feature what appears to be depictions of daily life in Imperial China, with a floral motif running the remainder of the chest. A scalloped brass bracket with simple, attached lock (key included) adorns the front, sporting an etched hummingbird and flower, in the style of Huaniaohua. Odeon/Art Deco-inspired carved edges round out the exterior. A simple interior with floating storage can be found upon opening the lid, allowing for two tiers of interior storage space.
